New Myer Centre tenant Onnie Chan wins title at the 2024 Women in Innovation Awards

ADA Lab, Adelaide’s immersive technology and digital art hub for women, right here in the Myer Centre, was recognised for its dedication to reducing the gender divide in the emerging tech sector.

Onnie Chan, founder of ADA Lab and Women in Creative Tech, took home the Social Impact award at the 2024 Women in Innovation Awards. There are 10 categories in total for each year including Science, Engineering, and Arts.

Since 2014, the Women in Innovation Awards program has showcased South Australia’s most innovative women – many who are pushing society’s stereotypes of leaders in industries that are saturated by men.

Chan, and her fellow awardees, are showing South Australian women that they not only belong in tech and digital arts, but they can thrive in it –

especially here in South Australia.

“South Australia has become an increasingly attractive hub for innovation and creative industries. The state’s growing emphasis on digital technology, gaming, and creative arts presents abundant opportunities for professionals in these fields. With initiatives like ADA Lab, South Australia is cultivating a supportive ecosystem for emerging talents, particularly women,” Chan said.

“There is a strong sense of community and collaboration in the local industry, which makes it a great environment for networking, mentorship, and career growth.”

South Australia has become the home for careers at the intersection of technology, creativity, and social impact.

Chan advises women not to let stereotypes or uncertainty hold them back.

“Technology and creativity are powerful tools for change, and your unique perspective is needed in these industries. The world of digital art and tech is exciting, constantly evolving, and full of opportunities to make a real impact. Knowing that there is a community of women and allies who are here to support you every step of the way. When one of us rises, we all do,” she added.

The awards recognise the women contributing to the local economy by creating jobs, revenue, and solutions. With the affordable, accessible prices at ADA Lab, Chan has made it possible for women to explore their curiosities and capabilities in cutting-edge tech through workshops, exhibitions and hands-on experience – while injecting money back into the local community. Ladies, it’s just another reason to visit the Myer Centre. This is much more than a shopping mall.
